A Pioneering Perspective: The Crabill House
One of the few Federal style homes in
the state open for public use, the Crabill House provides an authentic
representation of an early nineteenth century home. Constructed
by David and Barbara Crabill sometime between 1821 and 1826, the
home was occupied by the Crabill family until the early 20th century.
After standing empty for many years, the house was acquired by the
Clark County Historical Society who facilitated the major renovations
needed to stabilize and preserve the structure. The latest addition
is a newly constructed authentic outdoor bake oven that is currently
used to demonstrate cooking methods and foods used in early America.
Today, the David Crabill Homestead is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. Open seasonally for tours and special programs,
it offers a picturesque learning environment on the shores of the
Clarence J. Brown Reservoir.
